Leo McKern is best-known for his role as John Mortimer's irascible barrister Horace Rumpole in Rumpole Of The Bailey, in which he starred from 1978 to 1992, after first appearing in the role in a one-off play in 1975. However, the Australian actor made his film debut as Gaston Nikopopoulos in All For Mary (1955) and went on to appear in X The Unknown (1956), A Tale Of Two Cities (1958), The Running, Jumping & Standing Still - Film (1959), The Mouse That Roared (1959), The Day The Earth Caught Fire (1961), Doctor In Distress (1963), Hot Enough For June (1964), Help! (1965), A Man For All Seasons (1966), Assignment K (1968) and Ryan's Daughter (1970). On television, he guested in The Adventures Of Robin Hood and previously worked for The Infernal Machine's director David Tomblin on The Prisoner in which he appeared as Number Two in three episodes. He was also seen in a number of one-off television plays including Case Suspended, On The Eve Of Publication, The Caucasian Chalk Circle and The House On Garibaldi Street, and starred in the serials Our Mutual Friend, Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde and Reilly: Ace Of Spies. McKern's feature film appearances over the last three decades have included The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975), The Omen (1976), Candleshoe (1977), Damien: Omen II (1978), The Blue Lagoon (1980), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), The Chain (1985) and Ladyhawke (1985).
